Loss of an Austin Police Department Officer

It is with great sadness I write to tell you of the death of one our City of Austin Police Officers, Jaime Padron. Mr. Padron was fatally shot in the line of duty early this morning.

Officer Padron responded to a call of an apparently intoxicated, suspicious individual inside a north Austin WalMart. When Padron approached the suspect, he immediately engaged the officer in a physical altercation during which the suspect used a semi-automatic pistol to shoot Officer Padron. Despite the valiant efforts of APD and EMS personnel, Officer Padron succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced at the scene. He is survived by two young daughters, his parents and other family members. The only suspect was taken into custody by responding officers.

The loss of a member of the City of Austin family is a difficult and sorrowful occasion. By all accounts, Padron was an excellent officer and public servant, and he will be sorely missed. Events like this are a reminder of the great risk and sacrifice our officers make in the pursuit to make Austin a safe and secure community. As an organization, we will work to assist Jaime's family with their short and longer term needs. I ask that you keep the family of Officer Padron in your thoughts and prayers, and to take a moment this Easter weekend to convey love and appreciation to your own families and loved ones.

With a heavy heart,

Marc Ott,
City Manager
